Why Genetics May Predetermine the Gender of a Future Child

July 21, 2025

A team of scientists led by Siwen Wang from Harvard University analyzed data on more than 58,000 women who had given birth to two or more children. The researchers found that a pregnant woman raising three sons is 61% likely to give birth to a boy. Meanwhile, the probability of having a girl in a similar situation was 58%. Moreover, the scientists identified several other non-obvious factors that potentially influence the gender of a future child. Women who gave birth to their first child after the age of 28 were approximately 10% more likely to have only boys or only girls compared to those who started giving birth before the age of 23.
