20-Year-Old Develops 300 Kidney Stones From Drinks Instead of Water

June 16, 2025

A 20-year-old woman developed 300 kidney stones by drinking bubble tea, juice, and alcohol instead of water for a year. The case happened in Taiwan back in 2023, but it's only gone viral now. The woman experienced fever and severe lower back pain. A CT scan showed numerous kidney stones ranging from 5 mm to 2 cm - she underwent surgery to remove the stones. Doctors say that kidney stone formation occurs most frequently in spring and summer when it is hot and dehydration happens. Due to replacing water with sodas and other drinks, urine becomes concentrated, crystallizes, and forms stones.
