Children who had a dog during childhood are less likely to suffer from skin conditions such as eczema in adulthood. The study showed that children who had contact with household dogs in their first year of life had a lower likelihood of developing eczema than others. This may be linked to the 'training' of the immune system to adequately respond to external irritants like animal fur. However, the hypothesis does not hold true for cats.
